Our Work
On the Road to Community Change
A new regional agenda

We're doing things differently

A growing number of families across southeast Michigan are struggling. Chances are, you know one of these families that are having a tougher time today than just a year or so ago. Many are being forced to turn for help to agencies constantly scrambling to serve more people with dwindling resources.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan is responding to this urgent situation with the Agenda for Change - an aggressive new plan to equip more metro Detroiters with the tools and resources necessary to help themselves, to provide for their children and to realize brighter futures.  Your contributions make this work possible.

The Agenda for Change centers on three focus areas - Educational Preparedness, Financial Stability and Basic Needs - identified by the community, and it will guide our work for the next 10 years.

Thanks to regional input

United Way spent more than a year conducting the largest outreach effort of its kind in the region. More than 7,000 metro Detroiters shared over 20,000 comments with us through...

  • 6,500 survey responses
  • 100 One-one-one interviews
  • 30 community forums

One common theme echoed consistently throughout, that all people across Southeastern Michigan have the educational and economic opportunities needed to succeed and to thrive.

We're working with others

During our Agenda for Change outreach process, metro Detroiters told us clearly that they want to see regional leaders work more closely together. ONE D: Transforming Regional Detroit makes this possible.

The six members the One D collaborative include United Way for Southeastern Michigan, New Detroit, the Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit Renaissance, the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan.

Launched in November 2006, the partnership is working to make the region stronger and more vibrant by focusing on six areas of priority: economic prosperity, educational preparedness, regional transit, race relations, regional cooperation and quality of life.
