Living United My name is Kim. As a child, I struggled to read. But I was lucky enough to have adults in my life who offered the encouragement and support I needed to get better. Today, too many children in southeast Michigan aren’t learning the basics. Nearly 7,000 third graders in metro Detroit are not reading at grade level. When kids are unable to read by third grade, they spend the rest of their lives catching up. Through Operation ABCTM United Way is working to help first- and second-graders develop the literacy skills they need to stay on track through graduation. I’m one of 2,000 volunteers being recruited to work as tutors in classrooms across southeast Michigan. I spend a few hours each week helping kids who struggle with reading like I did because I know how important reading is to a child’s overall success. This is how I Live United. I encourage you to join me. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.
