Living United My name is Colleen. I have a passion for helping children, but as the president of a thriving business, it’s difficult to find time to give back. Yet, too many children in southeast Michigan aren’t learning the basics. Nearly 7,000 third graders in metro Detroit are not reading at grade level. When kids are unable to read by third grade, they spend the rest of their lives catching up. Through Operation ABCTM United Way is working to help first- and second-graders develop the literacy skills they need to stay on track through graduation. When I learned about the alarming statistics, and United Way’s solution, I knew I had to make time to be a part of it. I adopted three Operation ABC schools and am asking my employees to spend a few hours each week volunteering alongside me. This is how I Live United. I encourage you to join me. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.
